Glossary of Biodata

  • Ethnicity: This term is used to describe the assumed ethnicity of a prisoner. IPA researchers may sometimes be unable to confirm a prisoner’s ethnic identity, though it is sometimes possible to deduce a prisoner’s possible ethnic affiliation based on their hometown, the source of news, or other factors. This information is important to document trends of persecution against particular ethnic groups. In cases where IPA is unable to determine the ethnicity of a prisoner, the category is left as “unknown”.

  • Gender: This term is used to describe the assumed gender of a prisoner, based on the prisoner’s given name. Due to the heightened danger in Iran for non-binary, genderqueer, and gender-nonconforming individuals, IPA elects not to distinguish these individuals in the database.

  • Religion: This term is used to describe the assumed religion of a prisoner. IPA researchers may sometimes be unable to confirm a prisoner’s religion, though it is sometimes possible to deduce a prisoner’s religion based on their hometown, the source of news, or other factors. This information is important to document trends of persecution against particular religious groups. In cases where IPA is unable to determine the religion of a prisoner, the category is left as “unknown”.
